A private cinema is to be attached to the 18th century farmhouse. Building a black box in a beautiful garden is out of the question.
The project is an exercise in adding new to old without compromising either. To mediate between styles and structures, a dry stone wall is built to define a new entrance courtyard. The cinema is set behind the stone wall and can follow its own rules.
A copper-clad and timber lined barrel vault is cantilevered dramatically from the main house and rests on two pin joints which hover over the screen. This creates the artifice of ‘Proscenium Arch’ and provides small but important views of the garden
The cinema also doubles as a study that enjoys plentiful natural light when discreet shutters are unfolded and panels opened to form a desk. Walls are clad in a dark green military twill, for light and sound absorption.
