Gerona, Spain
The site contains a crumbling late 19th century farmhouse with crenelations.
We propose to rebuild the inside and crown the building with a floating wafer thin edged concrete roof with a perimeter terrace that affords spectacular views of the mountains.
Entry is through a new internal open cortile at ground level off which the main functions of the house are laid out.
The cortile is also the summer dining area with a view of the fields framed by the large entrance archway.
An open stairway in the cortile connects the main floor to the roof level quarters.
The building relies of natural air movement for cooling. The large overhanging roof provides deep shade and frames the views of the mountains above the crenelations.
The Cortile is shaded in the summer and sealed in the winter.
At night the reflected light off the roof turns the house into a beacon across the plains.
