The brief called for a new shelter to be erected beside the pretty lily pond on the grand axis from Pagoda to River.
Our response was an energy autonomous, paper structure with a perforated roof that allowed dappled light into the building.
The design creates a demonstrably sustainable structure. In summer the building draws air cooled by the adjacent Lily Gardens and its southern façades are shaded by fast-growing bamboo.
Giant sliding screens made of paper, fabric and polycarbonate protect the Paper Forest from the wind and rain.
Designed as a modular system of cardboard tree columns and branching cardboard props, the building reads as a forest canopy within the gardens.
“The design is innovative, extremely beautiful and sustainable. It represents a rare opportunity to bring architecture, nature and the environment into close association.”
